SOUTH PORTLAND — The School Board unanimously selected WBRC Architects and Engineers to assist in the first phase of discussions about the future of Mahoney and Memorial middle schools.

The Portland-based firm will work with the Middle School Building Committee to conduct research and develop a plan to secure funding, either through the state or a city referendum, Assistant Superintendent Kathy Germani said Feb. 8.

The scope of the project’s first phase is  to “simply study” the situation “and to provide options for considerations,” Germani told the board.

Mahoney Middle School is ranked 14th on the state’s funding list, and Memorial Middle School is at 55th. Typically the state only funds the top dozen, Germani said.

In the meantime, at Mahoney, “there’s only so much we can do. The state has very strict rules about what kind of study you can do or what kind of work your community can do in advance,” she said.

WBRC’s fee is still being negotiated, School Board Chairman Dick Matthews said Wednesday.
