SOUTH PORTLAND — Construction may hamper night-time traffic on Interstate 295 on Monday and Tuesday, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.

Exit 4 on the northbound interstate will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on April 23 and April 24, which MDOT acknowledged could inconvenience commuters.

The closure is necessary because of construction of the new Veterans Memorial Bridge, MDOT said in a press release Friday. Detour signs will be posted.

The Route 1 ramp to I-295 in South Portland, which feeds into the existing Veterans Memorial Bridge, is already closed through Friday, May 4.

The new Veterans Memorial Bridge is scheduled to open this summer; the old bridge will be removed by the end of the year.
