PORTLAND — A Pennsylvania newspaper publisher is the new owner of the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram and two other former Blethen Maine daily newspapers, as well as the Mainetoday.com Web site and several weekly publications.
Richard L. Connor, the editor and publisher of the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader, is now editor and publisher of the Portland papers, the Kennebec Journal in Augusta and the Waterville Sentinel. His newly formed company, MaineToday Media, announced it had purchased the papers Monday evening.
Connor, a Bangor native, will also serve as chief executive officer of MaineToday Media. The company partnered with Dallas-based private equity firm HM Capital Partners in the purchase. Newspaper union employees also have a stake in ownership of the company, according to a press release from MaineToday Media.
The Press Herald headquarters building on Congress Street, along with a former printing press building and parking lot across the street, are expected to be sold. Newspaper staff have also said they expect more layoffs. Several senior editors and managers were dismissed last week.
