FREEPORT — Two Hartford, Conn., residents were arrested April 12 and slapped with several charges, including heroin and crack cocaine possession, and theft.

Kenneth Fowler, 50, and 42-year-old Keashie Walker were spotted by police after Fowler allegedly attempted to back a 2001 Ford van he was driving out of the Interstate 295 northbound on-ramp, Police Lt. Susan Nourse said.

“That’ll kind of draw attention to yourself,” Nourse said.

After officers pulled the van over they allegedly found purses stolen from Kittery and Connecticut containing credit cards, checkbooks and other identification that did not match Fowler or Walker, Nourse said.

Police also said they found heroin and crack cocaine on Fowler, and crack and another “powder” on Walker, Nourse said. She could not recall the amounts.

In addition to those charges, Police charged Fowler with operating without a license and attaching false license plates.

Officials conducted a more thorough search of both Fowler and Walker at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland, and allegedly found additional cocaine hidden inside of them, Nourse said, which resulted in a charge of trafficking in prison contraband.

Both men were held at the jail through the weekend and were expected in court Tuesday afternoon.
