PORTLAND — Leaders of Maine’s Sudanese community are sponsoring an all-day conference Saturday, Sept. 25. about the future of the war-torn African country.

The conference will focus on a referendum scheduled for Jan. 9, 2011, to decide whether southern Sudan will become its own country. The conference will cover possible results of the referendum, including how Darfur will be effected, the likelihood of renewed war and the United Nation’s role.

Speakers representing the Sudanese and Southern Sudan governments, the Darfur movement, the U.S. envoy to Sudan and academics versed in the situation in Sudan are expected to speak.
