YARMOUTH — The Maine Department of Transportation announced last week that a new park-and-ride lot is now open on U.S. Route 1 at Interstate 295.
The lot, which cost nearly $1 million and has actually been in use for several weeks, provides 300 parking spaces, eight handicapped parking spots, and bicycle racks. It is accessible via Exit 15, both northbound and southbound.
The lot supplements an existing commuter lot in Yarmouth near Exit 17. It was identified as a regional priority in planning studies and responds to an increase in carpooling and commuting activities in the region, according to a statement from the Department of Transportation.
The new lot is the largest of 52 park-and-ride locations in the state. It is open to the public and allows overnight parking, but requires permission from the Department of Transportation to be used for more than 24 consecutive hours.
