PORTLAND — As Hurricane Irene bears down on the eastern seaboard, state parks are preparing by asking visitors to stay away.

On Sunday, when the storm is expected to hit Maine, 27 state parks will be closed, including all the state’s coastal parks.

Ferry Beach in Scarborough, Crescent Beach in Cape Elizabeth, Mackworth Island in Falmouth, Bradbury Mountain in Pownal, Sebago Lake in Naples, Range Pond in Poland, Reid State Park in Georgetown and Popham Beach in Phippsburg will all be closed Sunday.

The Eagle Island State Historic Site near South Harpswell will be closed Saturday.

Officials are expecting particularly high tides with the storm, putting erosion-prone areas at particular risk.
