PORTLAND — A training ship for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy will be in port for four days on July 31, offering free public tours through Sunday, Aug 1.

The Eagle, a 295-foot square-rigger, is expected to sail past Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth at about 10 a.m. on Friday, and will moor at the Maine State Pier on Commercial Street.

The Eagle has a crew of six officers and 56 enlisted sailors. During training periods, the ship, a floating classroom for those learning the basics of navigation and seamanship, sails with as many as 230 people.

The Eagle also serves as a goodwill ambassador to foreign nations, having visited Spain, Bermuda and Nova Scotia this summer. 

Public tours will be offered on Friday, July 31, from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 1, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
