SOUTH PORTLAND — Veterans Memorial Bridge is scheduled to be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, through Friday, Oct. 28, according the the Maine Department of Transportation.

Construction crews will be installing underground communication cables around the new bridge being built next to the existing span between Portland and South Portland.

There will be detour signs and message boards to alert drivers about alternate routes. Commuters are advised to plan ahead and allow more time to get to their destinations.

The closures were originally scheduled to start Sunday, but were delayed to accommodate a shipment of 40,000 tons of road salt scheduled to be trucked over the bridge to the Sprague Energy Terminal this weekend.
