The good times continued for two city football teams last weekend, while a third fell short.

The unstoppable force that is the two-time defending Class A champion Cheverus Stags increased their three-year win streak to 27 Friday night with a 42-0 victory at South Portland.

The Red Riots hold the all-time state record with 31 in a row, set in the 1990s when they were coached by John Wolfgram, who now coaches Cheverus.

Last year, the Stags pulled away in the second half to beat visiting South Portland, 59-21. This time around, after a scoreless first quarter, Cheverus took a 14-0 lead to the half behind touchdown runs from Brent Green and Donald Goodrich. The Stags ended all doubt in the third quarter as Goodrich twice scored on scoring runs and Cody O’Brien returned an interception for a score and a 34-0 advantage. O’Brien struck again in the fourth quarter with a fumble recovery for a TD and Cheverus had another win in the books.

The Stags figure to get a test Friday night, when they play at 2-1 Windham. The teams didn’t play last season. In 2010, Cheverus won at the Eagles, 28-0. Windham is the last team to beat the Stags, 7-6, in the 2009 Western A Final.

Portland matched last year’s win total of two with a 34-0 home win over Gorham Friday. Last year, the Bulldogs edged the visiting Rams, 12-8.

This time around, Portland found itself scoreless after one quarter, but took a 13-0 halftime lead thanks to a pair of long TD runs from Justin Zukowski. The Bulldogs relied on their defense for their third score, as Garang Majok had a fumble return for a score. Portland put it away on a long TD runs from Jayvon Pitts-Young and Nick Volger. Pitts-Young and Zukowski both rushed for over 100 yards.

The 2-1 Bulldogs play at 1-2 Bonny Eagle Friday. The Scots gave powerhouse Thornton Academy a scare last weekend, but lost, 37-20. The teams last met two years ago, a 55-20 Bonny Eagle win in Standish.

Deering fell to 0-3 with a 56-32 loss at Massabesic. The Rams had the lead in the second half before the Mustangs pulled away to drop Deering to 0-3 for the first time in over a decade.

The Rams hope to bounce back Friday, but it won’t be easy as 3-0 Scarborough pays a visit. The Red Storm is coming off wins over Bonny Eagle and Windham. Deering won last year at Scarborough, 14-7.
