AUGUSTA — Cheverus’ quest for a first boys’ outdoor track title since 1998 will have to wait at least one more season.

Saturday at Cony High School, the Stags didn’t quite have enough to take home the crown as their 66 points left them second to Brunswick (82). Portland had four points to wind up 21st. Deering did not score.

In the girls’ meet, won by Scarborough with 91 points, Cheverus (37) placed sixth, while Deering, led by the Ramonas sisters, had 12 points and came in 13th. Portland did not score.

At the Class B championships in Windham, McAuley placed 18th with 9.33 points. Waterville, as expected, rolled to the girls’ title with 168 points, almost double that of runner-up York (94).

Waynflete was scheduled to compete at the Class C meet in Foxcroft, but rain forced it to be postponed until Wednesday.

Not to be

After a strong regular season and a victory in last weekend’s SMAA championship meet, Cheverus felt it was ready to win the state title, but the Stags had no answer for Brunswick’s senior distance standout Will Geoghegan.

Cheverus’ 4×800 relay did steal some headlines by breaking the state record. Senior Taylor Dundas, junior Jack Terwilliger, senior Tim Woods and senior Andrew Snyder combined for a time of 7 minutes, 54.32 seconds.

Senior John White won the shot put (52 feet, 7 inches) and was second in the discus (149-6).

Terwilliger was runner-up to Geoghegan in the mile (4:12.57) and the two-mile (9:27.75). Senior Beau Michaud came in third in the shot put (46-11) and was sixth in the discus (122-3). Senior James Rutter finished fifth in both the 200 (23.53) and the shot put (45-1). Woods came in sixth in the 400 (51.40). Freshman Malcolm Smith placed sixth in the high jump (5-10). Junior Kane Molleo finished seventh in the javelin (150-6).

The Stags were sixth in the 400 relay (sophomore Joe Slattery, freshman Jackson McMann, junior Peter Gwilym and Rutter, 45.24). The 1,600 relay squad (Rutter, sophomore Louis Johnson, Gwilym and Woods) placed seventh (3:33.76).

“We just didn’t have our day,” said Cheverus coach Bruce Bickford. “(Brunswick was) the better team today. Some of the throws and running didn’t go the way we wanted. It went better for them. Kudos to them. We’ve had a lot of state titles over the years. It would have been nice to get back, but (Will) was amazing. Fun to watch.”

The Stags graduate the majority of their points.

“We lose just about everyone, but we have some good freshmen coming up,” Bickford said.

Portland’s points came from junior Imadhi Zagon, who’s been battling injury. He was fourth in the long jump (20-6.25).

In the girls’ meet, Cheverus was led by junior Caroline Summa, who won the high jump (5 feet).

Sophomore Fiona Hendry was runner-up to dynamic Kennebunk sophomore Abbey Leonardi in the mile (5:10.30). Senior Hannah Lyons placed third in the long jump (16-1.75) and fifth in the 100 (12.93). Senior Amelia Lundkvist came in fifth in the mile (5:22.32). Senior Lianna Rubinoff placed seventh in the two-mile (11:52.47).

The Stags 3,200 relay team (sophomore Lizzie Gwilym, Hendry, senior Abby Norbert and sophomore Emily Durgin) came in third (10:06.55).

Deering got a win from sophomore Ella Ramonas in the 800 (2:19.14).

“I got my goal time, which I’m really happy about,” Ramonas said. “I usually try to take over in the second lap, kick in and try to go as fast as possible. I was a little nervous at first at how I was going to pace myself. I couldn’t tell I won until I hit the end. It feels good.”

Senior Claire Ramonas was seventh in the shot put (34-8). Tricia Stewart placed seventh in the high jump (4-10).

In Windham, McAuley was paced by senior Lauren Fecteau, who finished fourth in the two-mile (12:22.10) and fifth in the mile (5:38.90). Sophomore Christina Leake placed sixth in the 800 (2:30.34). Junior Allison Bonner tied for seventh in the pole vault (7-6).
