CHEBEAGUE ISLAND — The town’s Internet provider is benefiting from a grant awarded by the ConnectME Authority to expand broadband communications services to unserved areas in Maine.

Chebeague is receiving $75,000 for chebeague.net, which with a match will fund the remainder of an approximately $153,000 project to increase bandwidth and improve distribution of Internet service on the island. That match will come from a variety of sources, like in-kind contributions with potential participation from the town of Chebeague Island. The town has not committed itself to that endeavor.

Chebeague had received a $75,000 grant in 2007 in ConnectME’s first round of grants. Those funds went toward network infrastructure to bring Internet service to every island home.

ConnectME has now awarded 76 grants, totalling $6 million.
