Cassidy Streeter of Scarborough chases streaming kite tails during the Bug Light Kite Festival in South Portland on May 15, a fundraiser for the South Portland Historical Society. The society was joined by the NorEasters Kite Club, showcasing artful kites and a popular candy drop from a giant pinata-like kite.Children of all ages scrambled to keep “Fugu” (Japanese for puffer fish) in the air and, at times, were pushed playfully to the ground as the giant fish blew about in fierce and sudden gusts. This kite is 15 feet tall; the owners, from Lowell, Mass., had to retire their 25-foot version early in the day because the winds were too strong. Jonas Varney of Portland is dazzled by a giant butterfly kite.
