TOPSHAM — Charles W. Epps, 89, of Augusta Road, died Oct. 22 at Coastal Manor in Yarmouth where he had been a resident for over two years.

He was born in Athens, Georgia, on July 7, 1925, the fifth child of Benjamin Thomas and Omie Williams Epps. He attended local schools and graduated from Athens High.

He joined the Navy after graduation and then proceeded to Pensacola, Florida for flight training. Epps attained the rank of commander and was in line to become a captain, but felt after 26 years it was time to retire, stay home and raise his two small children.

While stationed at Brunswick Naval Air Base, he met and married Phyllis Atwood, daughter of Horace and Louise Atwood of Brunswick. They have two children Charles “Chip” of San Francisco, and Stacy of Topsham.

He was a member of the Navy League of Brunswick, the Rotary Club and the QB’s. In 1968, he received the Joshua Chamberlain Award for Community Service.

He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Stacy; son, Chip; two brothers, Pat of Atlanta, and George and wife, Dot of Huntsville, Alabama, and 20 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at Stetson’s Funeral Home, Brunswick.
