POWNAL — A one-year seat on the Board of Selectmen will be up for election in June after Chairman Tim Giddinge on Monday announced his resignation, effective June 30.

Giddinge said on Tuesday that he simply felt the time was right to step down. He has served on the board for almost 12 years.

A three-year seat on the board is also be on the June 12 ballot. Selectman Jon Morris on March 6 said he is seeking re-election. Shawn Bennett has also taken out papers for the seat.

Now, Giddinge suggested, one of them could complete the final year of his term.

“It isn’t often we have multiple people in Pownal running for a seat,” Giddinge said. “This year we have two (so) it’s the perfect time for me to step aside.”

A one-year term on Regional School Unit 5 Board of Directors and a three-year term on the Cemetery Commission will also be up for grabs.

Nominees must collect no less than 25 and no more than 100 signatures from registered Pownal voters. Papers must be filed by 4:30 p.m. April 12.

Those interested in serving the remainder of Giddinge’s three-year term, or filling any of the other three openings, may pick up nomination papers at the town office at 429 Hallowell Road.
