BRUNSWICK — Cecile G. Pelletier, 88, died peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 11, with her daughter, Rita, by her side.
On Jan. 6 1922, she was born in Lisbon, the second of five children of Frank Bernier and Genevieve DuQuesnoy and attended schools in Lisbon and Brunswick.
She married Alcide Pelletier in 1941.
She worked a variety of jobs before beginning her beloved position with the Bowdoin College Dining Service.
For 32 years she was known as the “soup-lady,” a greeter and second mother to generations of Bowdoin students.
With her warm and caring personality, she was embraced by the college community and enjoyed meeting students, alumni, faculty and staff. Several graduation speeches over the years mentioned her as a person who made the college a better place.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, boating on Casco Bay, and fishing for mackerel.
In 1992 her family took her to Paris to see her mother’s birthplace, and in later years, she enjoyed family trips to Canada, Scotland and Ireland.
Her husband of 34 years, Alcide Pelletier, predeceased her, as well as her siblings, Roland Bernier, Germaine Paiement, Theresa Deemer and Robert Bernier.
She is survived by her daughter Rita Worthing and her husband Dr. Mark Worthing of Brunswick, granddaughter Katherine Worthing and her husband Sam Heck of Portland, and grandson Eric Worthing of Portland; and her son George Pelletier and his wife Diana of Gorham and their children Angela and Keith; brother-in-law Leonel Pelletier and his wife Jofrette of Topsham, and sisters-in-law Jeanne d’arc Bourque, Gertrude Labbe and Ann Marie Pelletier of Brunswick; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 18 at St. John the Baptist Church, Pleasant Street, Brunswick, with a reception to follow.
