SCARBOROUGH — Cecilia Rand Berwick, 79, a resident at Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough, died May 16, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born March 11, 1934, in Farmington, to Marion Young Rand and Cecil Rand. She graduated from Farmington High School and then entered the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed at Camp LeJeune, N.C.

In addition to being a full-time mother and frequent public-school advocate, Berwick worked as a home health aid. She last worked as a foster grandparent at Bayside Community Center in Portland.

For more than 65 years, she was also a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, primarily in the Cape Elizabeth Ward.

Berwick was predeceased by her beloved infant son, Jodi Laird.

She is survived by her former husband and lifelong friend, Robert Berwick; her sisters, Clara Lawrence, of Hermon and Geraldine Cook, of Surry; her children Roberta Elias, of Natick, Mass., Rebecca McLellan, of Naples, Robert A. Berwick, of Saco, Regena Deck, of Raymond, N.H., and Randall Berwick, of San Jose, Calif. She is also survived by many treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be a graveside service with full military honors at 9 a.m., May 29, at the Veterans’ Cemetery in Augusta.
