PORTLAND — The state’s only single-gender college preparatory high school is changing its name.
Catherine McAuley High School is embarking on a formal renaming process, and is seeking input from students, parents, faculty, staff, its board of trustees and alumni.
The all-girl school, named after the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, announced last October that it is becoming independent from its religious affiliation. Because the name Catherine McAuley is connected with the religious order, the Rhode Island-based Sisters of Mercy Northeast Community informed the school it would not be able to use the name or a variation of it.
The school must have a new name in place by July 1; the current affiliation ends June 30.
