CAPE ELIZABETH — A Police Department recommendation to review parking rules on one street in the Cape Cottage neighborhood has prompted the Town Council to initiate a review of all parking regulations in town.

The Ordinance Committee will discuss the issue through November, when it will report back to the council.

In a memo to the town manager, police Chief Neil Williams said that summer visitors to Casino Beach have created a “serious parking problem” on Cottage Lane that prevents emergency vehicles from responding to the area. He has recommended that there be no parking near the end of Cottage Lane and on the narrow end of Surf Road to alleviate the problem.

He has also asked for the removal of a section of the ordinance prohibiting parking on the street when other parking is available, because of the difficulty of enforcement.

The council has also heard from residents in the Charles Road area requesting a review of on-street parking along Shore Road near the recently expanded business district, and has decided to address parking issues throughout town more comprehensively.

“If anyone has any concerns about parking anywhere in town, this would be a good time to bring it forward,” Town Manager Michael McGovern said.

The Ordinance Committee has not yet scheduled the first meeting to discuss parking. That meeting will be added to the town Web site calendar at a later date.
