PORTLAND — Casco Bay High School Principal Derek Pierce was named Maine’s Principal of the Year for 2016.

The award, by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, was announced at an all-school assembly Monday. Pierce will also be honored by the Maine Principals Association at its annual awards banquet on April 28.

According to a School Department press release, Pierce received the award based on his accomplishments as an educational leader, a role model in the development of positive school culture and climate, for building student-centered programs, and for his ability to inspire those around him.

Mayor Ethan Strimling called Pierce a “jewel in Portland” and praised his work in a prepared statement.

“I am beyond pleased that he is being recognized statewide for his excellent work with Portland school kids,” Strimling said. “We are lucky to have his skills in our community.”
