PORTLAND — Carroll W. Shepard Sr., 83, died on June 15 after a long illness.

He was born in Portland on Dec. 30, 1928, to Ernest and Agnes Shepard. He attended Portland public schools.

Shepard married the love of his life, the late Martha L. Curry in 1948; she died in 2010.

He served in the U.S. National Guard and the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1950. After he was discharged, he worked in the baking business with Cushman’s and Nissen’s. He then worked at St. Joseph’s Manor and, later, the City of Portland as a custodian.

Shepard had a huge passion for sports and was a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan. He coached little league, Babe Ruth and men’s softball. He never missed one of his grandchildren’s games, no matter the sport. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family at barbecues and Sunday dinners.

He was predeceased by his wife; brother, Ralph Shepard; and two grandsons, Tommy and Kevin Moulton.

Shepard is survived by his six children, Virgina Mora and her husband, Bienvenido, of South Portland, Judith Foster and her husband, John, of Lisbon, Patricia Moulton and her husband, Thomas, of Old Orchard Beach, Pamela Moulton and her husband, Guy, of Portland, Carroll W. Shepard Jr. and his wife, Shari, of Westbrook and Paula Lyndon of Portland; Marvin Woodbury of Durham, who was like another son to him; 13 grandchildren and their husbands and wives; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Maine Medical Center for their compassion and dedication.

Visiting hours will be held 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at A.T. Hutchins LLC Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland. Interment will take place immediately after the service at Highland Memorial Gardens, Highland Avenue, South Portland.
