FALMOUTH — Carolyn Ida “Cal” Scheuchzer, 87, formerly of Portland, died peacefully April 1 at Sedgewood Commons.

Born in Portland on June 30, 1922, she was the daughter of Eugene Scheuchzer of Switzerland and Lina Kern Scheuchzer of Portland. 

After she graduated from Deering High School in 1940, she attended Bay Path College in Massachusetts where classmates gave her the nickname “Cal.” 

For 20 years she worked in the bookkeeping department at Burnam & Morrill in Portland. From 1960 until her retirement in 1990 she worked in insurance for John C. Paige and later for Fred S. James.

She was a charitable person who advocated for the poor and homeless.

Her favorite pastimes included traveling, especially taking trips with her parents and brother to Switzerland to visit family, and spending time with friends and family at the family camp on Highland Lake.

Devoted to her younger brother Sonny, she was always watching over him and cared for him in his aging years.

While she did not have children of her own, she enjoyed spending time with her niece and nephew, mentoring them and giving out words of wisdom and love. 

She was predeceased by her brother, Eugene E. “Sonny” Scheuchzer, Sr., who died this past February. 

Surviving are her nephew, Eugene Ed. “Ted” Scheuchzer, Jr., of Portland, and her niece, Debra C. Ryan of Buxton.

A joint graveside service for Carolyn and her brother Eugene will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 14, with a private reception for family and friends to follow.
