NORTH YARMOUTH — Carol F. Black, 71, of North Yarmouth, died peacefully at her home March 19.

She was born Sept. 13, 1941, in Portland to John E. and Vyra R. Tompson. She grew up in North Yarmouth and had many interests, belonging to the Juvenile Grange and the 4-H club, where she learned gardening, homemaking, canning, freezing, and sewing. She attended a 4-H state day in Orono where she modeled everything she made, and the items were also displayed that year at the Cumberland Fair.

Black also took tap dance classes and was active at North Yarmouth Congregational Church Sunday School, vacation bible school, and youth group. She graduated from Greeley High School in 1959.

On May 28, 1957, she met George L. Black Sr. the man whom she would marry on Sept. 26, 1959, and share her life with. They raised five children in Lisbon and later North Yarmouth, where she was a very active mother and chaperoned many school trips. She also worked in a greenhouse, was a childcare provider, cook and later food service supervisor for the Lamp Nursing Home, as well as an associate for Hannaford Bros. She provided home health care for the elderly and was involved in Friday luncheons, Lion’s Club Dinners and Senior Citizens Luncheons in Cumberland, Yarmouth and North Yarmouth. She was affectionately referred as the “Energizer Bunny” for all that she did.

Black returned to First Congregational Church of North Yarmouth as an adult and served on various committees and at church functions including as a deacon and a member of the Tuesday Gals.

She loved to travel and visited London, Bermuda, Canada and many states in the U.S.

She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, George L. Black Sr., of North Yarmouth; her children, Deborah L. Black, of North Yarmouth, Lisa C., and her husband, Eugene Milton, of Centreville, Md., George L. Black Jr., and his significant other, Brenda Haggett, of Gray, Dana W., and his wife, Kasey Black, of Sagamore, Mass., and John A., and his wife, Alicia Black, of New Gloucester; her 13 grandchildren James, Malik, and Robyn Black, Patrick and Gabrielle Milton, Stephanie, Kari, Daniel, and Elizabeth Black, Laura Quintal, and David, Madison, and Olivia Black; special “daughters” Sabina Fauser of Sao Paolo, Brazil, and Charlyndee Campbell, of North Yarmouth; her sisters, Joan Labbe, Phyllis Rhude, and Lin Murphy; her brother, Bill Tompson, and his wife, Cindy, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Black is predeceased by her father and mother and her brothers, Cy and David Tompson.

A celebration of her life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church of North Yarmouth. A graveside memorial will be held in the spring with a date to be determined.
