BATH — Carl Kamphausen, 80, died on Oct. 22 at HillHouse in Bath after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Born in New York, N.Y. on Feb. 27, 1931, he spent summers as a boy in Green Port, Long Island where his family owned and operated the Townsend Manor Inn. It was there that his love of boats and sailing started, and he built his first boat at age 5.

He graduated from Friends Academy in Locust Valley, N.Y., and later completed a double major in Economics and Philosophy at Earlham College, in Richmond, Ind.

After graduating college, he worked as an industrial engineer in South Bend, Ind. before being transferred to Connecticut’s Uniroyal manufacturing firm. He also served eight years with the United States Navy Construction Battalion Reserves.

In 1969, Kamphausen opened his own business in New Haven, Conn. which he operated for 23 years. After retirement he learned to love the Maine environment; he became interested in the Small Point One Design sailboats and enjoyed maneuvering around the rocky coast of Maine under sail. He was a meticulous craftsman who spent many years restoring antique boats and cars.

Kamphausen was predeceased by his parents Rudolph Carl and Mahetable Townsend Kamphausen.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeht Renear Kamphausen; his two daughters, Elizabeth Peacock Kamphausen and Linda Townsend Kamphausen; his brother-in-law Daniel Peacock and his wife Joan of Topsham; their families; and “member of thte family” Petra Doan.

There will be no memorial service at his request, but donations can be made to the Phippsburg Volunteer Fire Department, P.O Box 83, Phippsburg, ME 04562.

His family would like to thank the Phippsburg Volunteer Fire Department for their help in meeting Carl’s progressive medical equipment needs and to those health care workers and hospice nurses who assisted Carl in his last weeks of life.
