PORTLAND — An annual festival to raise money for the Compass Project will add a sink-or-swim element Saturday, July 19, when contestants build and race cardboard boats.

The festival runs from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at Pebble Beach and the Eastern Promenade, with live music from Jerks of Grass and The Faulkingham Project, and a “Rowgatta” open to any “seaworthy, human-powered vessel.”

The events replace the day-long boat-building festivals of the past, and organizers hope for at least 30 teams racing the cardboard boats.

Compass Project works with at-risk youth in York and Cumberland counties, providing practical education and leadership training through boat building. For more information on the festival and cardboard boat races, visit Compass Project at on.fb.me/VFSvR3.
