PORTLAND — Martin’s Point Health Care Center, pharmacy and laboratory remained closed today after two carbon monoxide leaks last week left more than a dozen employees ill.

Spokesman Dave Garrison said the facilities will remain closed until results from air quality tests conducted last Friday are received and analyzed, and the building is deemed safe.

Garrison said some patients will continue to receive treatment at other buildings on the health care center’s Veranda Street campus. Patients who need to reschedule appointments will be contacted by Martin’s Point, he said. 

“Many of the patients who need care over the next few days are being seen,” Garrison said. 

On May 6, 14 employees complained of nausea and other symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure. Nine were taken to a local hospital and treated without being admitted, according to Garrison, who said five were treated on the scene.

Garrison said the affected facilities were cleared and reopened on Thursday, May 7, but were closed again the next day, after 13 employees again complained of carbon monoxide exposure symptoms. All 13 were treated on the scene, he said, and the facilities were closed until further notice. 

Garrison said air filters in the ventilation system are being cleaned and carbon monoxide detectors have been installed, although the source of the leaks has not been determined.

“We’re not going to take any chances,” Garrison said.
