CAPE ELIZABETH — Town Councilor David Sherman this week said he will not seek re-election in November.

Nomination papers are available Monday, July 28, for four open seats on the Town Council and School Board.

Sherman was first elected to the council in 2008 and was re-elected in 2011.

“Although serving on the council has been a rewarding experience, I am not planning to run again 2014,” he said.

Sherman said that after many years serving the town, he’d like to take some time to himself.

“I’ve been on the council for six years and before that, the Planning Board for six years. That’s 12 years worth of evening workshops,” Sherman said. “I felt like it was time to take a break.”

Sherman, an attorney, is the council’s representative to the Portland Jetport Noise Abatement Committee. He is a partner at the Drummond Woodsum law firm in Portland.

Prior to being elected to the council, Sherman was a member of the Planning Board from 2000 to 2006, including two years as chairman. He has also served as president of the Cape Elizabeth Education Foundation.

Sherman said it was time to let someone else take his seat so he could focus on other things.

“It seemed time to rotate off to other things and take some evenings off,” he said.

Nomination papers will be available in the town clerks office and are due back by Sept. 5 at 4 p.m. Candidates must submit 25 to 100 signatures from registered Cape Elizabeth voters to qualify for the Nov. 4 ballot.

The other council seat up for election is held by Councilor Kathy Ray.

“I do plan to run again,” Ray said. “I have enjoyed my three years on the Council and I love giving my time to the town.”

The School Board positions are held by Joanna Morrissey and Elizabeth Scifres. Neither could be reached for comment about the their plans to run or not.

All four seats are for three-year terms that expire Dec. 11, 2017.
