CAPE ELIZABETH — Town Councilor Paul McKenney gave notice at Monday’s council meeting that he will resign at the end of this year, with one year left in his three-year term of office.
McKenney cited difficulty balancing the council schedule with his military duties and civilian life. He said he opted to remain on the council through the end of the year to avoid the need for a special election, which could cost the town several thousand dollars.
Instead, a replacement will be elected in the general election in November. Nomination papers for that election, which will coincide with the election of three other councilors and three School Board members, will be available at the end of July.
McKenney was elected to the council in January 2005 to fill the last two years of an unexpired term and was re-elected in November 2007.
