CAPE ELIZABETH — A resident has organized a 5K run/walk to honor her sister’s memory and raise money for breast cancer research.
Beth Elicker, 50, was inspired to create the Lucy Fund 5K to continue fundraising efforts started five years ago by her sister Lucy Stanovick, who died in August 2012 of metastatic breast cancer.
The run/walk begins at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 30, at Cape Elizabeth Middle School and travels through residential neighborhoods within the town center – the same course as the annual Cape Challenge. The race will be timed and there are several age categories of competition. Participants can register until race time at a cost of $30.
Stanovick lived for four years after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. During that time, she established the Lucy Fund and raised more than $200,000 for the National Foundation for Cancer Research by hosting benefits in her native Pennsylvania.
Elicker, executive vice president of Maine College of Art, said all money raised from the event will go to cancer researcher Danny Welch through the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
