BRUNSWICK — Local filmmakers will show off their finest productions when Brunswick Theater Project hosts its first Brunswick Student Film Night on Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
The films will range from short animation to documentary to psychodrama. Each film is an original created by a local student. The event, which will be held at 14 School St., will include a screening, discussion with filmmakers and a reception.
“We’re excited to host this event, and pleased that the Theater Project can be the one to introduce the community to the work of these young filmmakers,” Theater Project Executive Director Wendy Poole said in a press release. ”
The films were created and edited on laptop computers. Friends and family are the actors, while Brunswick and the surrounding area serve as the backdrop for many scenes.
“This is grassroots, living-room style creativity,” Poole added. “It’s the type of from-the-heart artistic expression we encourage at the Theater Project.”
The filmmakers include students from New York University and Brunswick High School.
Hannah Weddle, who created “Field of Dreams” and “Squirrel Encounters,” is a 2006 BHS graduate pursuing a degree at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Weddle is a former honoree of the Maine Student Film and Video Festival.
Carl Elsaesser is a BHS graduate who was a winner in the Senior Division at the 2006 Maine Student Film and Video Festival. Elsaesser, who previously worked for Ken Burns’ Florentine Films, is studying film at Hampshire College and his showing “Paradise Clause” on Film Night.
“Recall,” created by BHS students Jasper Lowe and Ripley Swan, will also be shown. Their film was the Grand Prize Winner at the 2009 MSFVF.
Another BHS student, Christian Schneider, will also show his work, “The Invisible People,” a documentary about Franco mill workers in Brunswick that was recognized at the 2009 MSFVF.
The event is open to the public with a suggested donation ticket price of $10. Tickets are available by calling 729-8584.
The Theater Project was founded in 1971 as a non-profit designed to provide and teach theater to the community.
