BRUNSWICK — As the town prepares to move its main offices from 28 Federal St. to the new Town Hall at 85 Union St., the Town Council has started to look at possible capital improvement projects for the next five years.
At a Monday workshop, the council reviewed more than $14 million worth of projects recommended by the Capital Improvement Plan committee.
Before the workshop began, interim Town Manager John Eldridge said Town Hall operations will be closed April 4, 7 and 8. The new Town Hall will open on April 9.
The draft CIP, which will be used as a planning document for fiscal years ending 2015-2019, will have to be approved by the council later this spring.
The CIP also includes a list of more than $70 million of projects under development, which means they are “under active consideration, but may be evaluated from several alternatives,” according to a CIP memo.
The $14 million list of recommended projects is divided into facility improvements, infrastructure improvements, capital acquisitions and annual reserves for things like the town’s municipal vehicle replacement program.
The most expensive capital project recommended is a boiler plant replacement for Brunswick High School. It is estimated to cost nearly $537,000 in fiscal year 2017.
The next two largest proposals are a $500,000 project to reconstruct Nancy Drive, Patricia Road and Pierce Lane, and a $454,000 project to improve the high school’s interior air quality and heating efficiency, both for fiscal 2015.
Most of the proposed expenditures would be covered by general obligation bonds issued by the town or its general fund balance, though there are a few projects that would likely be covered by outside sources, including state funds.
One of the more notable projects listed under development is the estimated $24 million project to construct a new elementary school. A spending package is expected to go to a town-wide referendum in June 2015.
