BRUNSWICK — A pedestrian was hit by a Police Department cruiser at Maine and Mill streets early Wednesday morning.

Officer Matthew Nicholson, 23, was turning left from Maine Street onto the Mill Street ramp at about 1:30 a.m. when he hit John Ross, 35, who was crossing Mill Street against the signal in a crosswalk, according to a police press release.

Ross was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life-threatening injuries. He told police he had not hit the crosswalk button, and was walking against the signal.

“It is believed that vision for both parties involved was hindered by the extremely hard rain storm that was passing through the area at the time,” Cmdr. Marc Hagan said.

The crash is under review by department supervisors. Nicholson was not injured.
