BRUNSWICK — College Guild, a nonprofit that provides free correspondence courses to prison inmates across the country, has received almost $10,000 in grants from local and national foundations.
The independent organization, which is not affiliated with Bowdoin College, received a $2,400 grant from the Bowdoin College McKeen Center; $2,000 from the National Home Library Foundation; and $5,000 from the Reisert Foundation, according to a press release.
The awards will allow the organization to reduce its waiting list of more than 500 inmates. More than 6,000 inmates have enrolled in courses since College Guild was founded 15 years ago.
