Once again, the powerhouse Brunswick lacrosse teams have produced All-Americans.

The Dragons boys’ team placed senior defender John Williams on the team. Williams was a four-year varsity team member and started since his sophomore year. He was a captain as a junior and senior and also lettered in football and basketball. Williams was named the 2010 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference boys’ lacrosse Player of the Year and averaged over 8 ground balls per game over his career.

“John has been an outstanding athlete and leader for the Dragons,” said Brunswick coach Don Glover. “He’s a true competitor with the utmost of sportsmanship.”

Williams will go to the University of Connecticut next year to study engineering.

Brunswick’s first All-American was Mike Sfirri in 2003. Brad Bishop (2004), Kit Smith (2007) and Max Rosner (2008 and 2009) have also been selected.

Williams was joined on this year’s team by Cape Elizabeth senior defender Ben Brewster and senior attack Tom Foden, Falmouth senior midfielders Dan Hanley and Michael Kane, Portland junior midfielder Caleb Kenney, St. Dom’s senior attack Trevor Haefele and Yarmouth senior attack Steven Petrovek and senior goalie Cam Woodworth.

On the girls’ side, Leila Mills was chosen. Mills helped the Dragons win the 2008 and 2009 Class A Finals and has long been a top offensive force. She led the team in scoring (63 goals, 31 assists in 2010) and total points for all four years of her career, ending with 300 total career points. She was a first-team All-Conference selection three times and this season was chosen as KVAC Player of the Year.

“Leila has been a terrific combination of both feeder and finisher,” said Brunswick coach Beth Caputi. “For example, (in 2009), she had 55 goals and 56 assists. She has the ability to work through the tightest of spaces and find an opening for a shot on the other side. It will take several players to replace her offensive output next year.”

Mills is the seventh Brunswick player to earn All-American honors. The others were Laura-Lee Bishop (2002), Jenna McCabe (2002, honorable mention, and 2003), Alison Doughty (2003, honorable mention), Heidi Mills (2004, honorable mention), Stephanie Fisher (2008) and Cecilia Kjellman (2009, honorable mention).

Mills, who will attend Wheaton College next year, was joined on this year’s All-American team by North Yarmouth Academy’s Courtney Dumont, Waynflete’s Morgan Woodhouse and Yarmouth’s Danielle Torres. Kennebunk’s Camille Auger was an honorable mention.
