TOPSHAM — A local bicycle group is holding two races this Sunday to raise funds for programs to increase bicycle safety.

The Merrymeeting Wheelers Bicycle Club will hold the Merrymeeting Time Trial at Roller World on Route 201. Online registration at bikereg.com expires on Friday, but interested parties can still sign up Sunday morning, starting at 6:30 a.m.

The trial will consist of two races: a competitive 20-mile course that begins at 9 a.m., and a novice 10-mile course that begins at 8 a.m.

All proceeds from registration will go toward programs to provide helmets to children and increase the number of local school bike racks.

The proceeds will also be used to erect new signs in the area that are designed to inform motorists of the new state law that requires motorists to maintain a three-foot distance from cyclists on all roads.
