BRUNSWICK — Two Brunswick residents were arrested Tuesday after they allegedly assaulted a police officer.

Brunswick police went to the apartment of Leishia Williams, 36, on Tuesday to arrest her for allegedly selling drugs out of her home, which is near a school.

But they weren’t aware that someone else was at the residence, according to Brunswick Deputy Police Chief Marc Hagan.

Detectives went to the Williams’ apartment just before 2 p.m. with probable cause to arrest Leishia Witham, 36, on charges of aggravated trafficking in drugs, namely prescription pills Ritalin and Dilaudid, according to Hagan.

Police attempted to speak to Witham through the door and advise her of her rights, Hagan said, but didn’t know that 36-year-old Jesse York also was inside the apartment.

When Detective Rich Cutliffe leaned through the door and grabbed Witham, York allegedly slammed into the door, catching Cutliffe’s upper body between the door and the doorjamb.

Detectives then entered the building and arrested the two, charging Witham with aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs – aggravated because the apartment is within 1,000 feet of St. John’s Catholic School – as well as assault on an officer and refusal to submit to arrest or detention. She was being held at Cumberland County Jail in Portland on $1,640 bail.

York was charged with obstructing government administration and assault on an officer. He was also at the county jail, unable to post his $740 bail.

Cutliffe was later examined at a local hospital, but did not suffer serious injuries, Hagan said.
