BRUNSWICK — The town is a step closer to putting a new police station on the corner of Pleasant and Stanwood streets.

Town Manager Gary Brown announced Monday that the Brunswick Development Corp., which is purchasing the property for the town, reached an agreement with the land owners and has paid a deposit.

He said he expects the BDC to close on the acquisition by the end of July.

The BDC is purchasing four parcels for more than $952,000. The commission paid to the Realtor brings the total to nearly $999,000. The BDC will also pay for the demolition of the existing structures and the widening of Stanwood Street, estimated at $60,000 and $75,000 respectively.

According to Town Council Chairwoman Joanne King, all the money is coming from the BDC, not taxpayers.

The BDC is a nonprofit, quasi-municipal economic development agency whose board includes two town councilors, the town manager and finance director, and three public directors with experience in business.

The council has not formally voted to accept the Pleasant and Stanwood site, but King said BDC is proceeding with the purchase and will retain ownership of the property.

“If the town proceeds with the police station there may be a transfer of property to the town,” she said. If not, the site will belong to the BDC, which King said can do whatever it pleases with the land.

In April, King asked the BDC to buy the property on behalf of the town to speed up the site acquisition process and limit the burden on taxpayers. The BDC has traditionally spent its money on private economic development projects like Harbor Technologies in the Brunswick Business Park.

But King said in April that she believes a police station fits the BDC’s mission of encouraging economic development in Brunswick, and is an appropriate use of the money, especially during challenging economic times.
