BRUNSWICK — The Town Council was unanimous in a message to the state Legislature Monday night: reject the budget cuts proposed by Gov. Paul LePage.
The council voted 9-0 in a resolution to oppose LePage’s proposed biennial state budget. The resolution will be sent to the state Legislature.
LePage’s proposal includes the suspension of municipal revenue sharing, the shift of state teacher retirement costs to towns, the elimination of the Homestead and “circuit breaker” exemptions and reductions to General Assistance and excise tax revenue to towns.
An estimate by the Maine Municipal Association shows the town could lose $2.1 million in revenue next year from the suspension of revenue sharing and cuts to excise tax revenue.
The town has prepared town and school budgets that do not take into account LePage’s proposed budget cuts. The School Board has already passed a resolution opposing the cuts.
