BRUNSWICK — The Planning Board on Tuesday decided to hold a public hearing on a proposed AM radio tower. The board also sent the rezoning of the Longfellow School to the Town Council.

The rezoning is part of a proposed exchange of Longfellow School for Bowdoin College’s McLellan building on the corner of Noble and Union streets. Although details of that swap are still being worked out, Bowdoin College compromised by accepting a lower housing density of eight unit per acre, and prohibition of a recreational facility as an accepted use on the Longfellow School property.

The public hearing on the tower project will likely be held Sept. 27.

FirstWave Media, which is attempting to resurrect community AM radio in Brunswick, has proposed building a 199-foot tower on Old Portland Road on a site that previously was believed to be too small for the structure. But after months of searching, the group’s attorney and engineers say the site would work after all.
