A busy week of playoff action concluded with just one team still alive in its quest for a state championship.

Here’s a look at everything that has transpired in recent days.

Tennis

Brunswick’s girls’ tennis team once again made it to the Class A state final, but this time, the Dragons weren’t able to capture a title as Falmouth (which moved up in classification this spring due to increased enrollment) was too tough, prevailing, 5-0, to hand Brunswick its first loss in 16 matches this spring.

Maisie Siilverman lost at first singles to Olivia Leavitt (3-6, 3-6). Ali Stankiewicz was beaten at second singles, 1-6, 2-6, by Julia Brogan. Leah Soloway lost to Caroline Ray at No. 2 singles, 1-6, 0-6. The first doubles pairing of Samiera MacMullen and Kira Wolpow fell, 1-6, 0-6 to Katie Ryan and Kate Kelley. Lyse Henshaw and Elizabeth Day played tough at second doubles, but lost, 4-6, 3-6, to Amanda Watson and Mary Hyland.

Mt. Ararat’s boys also made it to the state match and lost to Falmouth. The Eagles, ranked fifth, upset No. 2 Hampden Academy, 5-0, in the regional final to earn a first-ever trip to states, but like the Brunswick girls, lost to Falmouth (by a 3-2 score) to finish the year 10-6.

Nick Mathieu earned a win by default at first singles when Falmouth’s Justin Brogan had to retire after re aggravating an ankle injury in the first set with the score tied, 1-1. Trevor Mayo and Eric Knight were 6-3, 6-2 winners over Ben Aicher and Joe Lesniak at first doubles. Mike Crawford fell, 1-6, 0-6, to state singles champion Brendan McCarthy at second singles. Joe Thomas lost, 0-6, 0-6, to Aidan McGrory at No. 3 singles and the second doubles team of John Roux and Joey Reed fell, 0-6, 0-6, to John Fallon and Matt Hutcheon.

Boys’ lacrosse

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team hosted two-time defending regional champion Cheverus (10-4) in the Eastern A Final Wednesday night. The Dragons, seeded first, ousted No. 8 Lewiston in the quarterfinals (15-2) and No. 4 Mt. Ararat (11-1) in the semifinals to improve to 12-2. Brunswick and Cheverus don’t play during the regular season. The Stags have ended each of the Dragons’ past two seasons with one-goal playoff wins.

If the third time was the charm for Brunswick, it will face either South Portland (12-1) or Thornton Academy (11-3) in the Class A state final Saturday at 5:30 p.m., at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Mt. Ararat was an 8-5 quarterfinal round winner over No. 5 Cony, but wound up 9-5 after its 11-1 loss to Brunswick in the semifinals.

In Eastern B, Morse, ranked third, was knocked out by No. 6 Camden Hills, 10-9, in the quarterfinals to end up 9-4.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Morse got the farthest. The Shipbuilders, ranked third in Eastern B, ousted No. 6 Camden Hills, 19-7, in the quarterfinals, but Monday, at No. 2 Freeport in the semifinals, Morse lost, 13-6, to finish 11-3. The Shipbuilders led, 4-3, late in the first half, then didn’t score for nearly 25 minutes as the Falcons rattled off eight straight goals to put it away. Ann Tolan had two goals.

“We felt good coming in, but this is not how we played all year,” said Shipbuilders coach Linda Levesque. “It was more us than anything they did. We had a great week of prep. Going into the game, we were sky-high. We just didn’t do what we’ve worked on.

“It is a step in the right direction. This is the best regular season we’ve had. We’re making progress. We have to keep reinforcing the style we want to play and that it will work.”

In Eastern A, Mt. Ararat, the number seven seed, took second-ranked Messalonskee to the brink in the quarterfinals, but lost, 9-8, to wind up 6-7.

Brunswick, seeded eighth, was no match for defending champion Cheverus and lost, 20-5, in the quarterfinals, to finish its season 5-8.

Baseball

Morse’s baseball team, ranked sixth in Western B, went one-and-done, losing at No. 3 Poland in last week’s quarterfinals, 3-2, to finish 10-7.

Brunswick, the ninth-ranked team in Eastern A, won its preliminary round game last week, 19-5, at No. 8 Edward Little, then was ousted, 6-3, by top-ranked Bangor in the quarterfinals to finish the season 9-9.

Outdoor track

Several Mid-Coast athletes took part in the New England outdoor track and field championships last weekend in Bridgewater, Mass.

Mt. Ararat’s Andrew McCracken was ninth in the boys’ pole vault (13 feet 3 inches). Brunswick’s 3,200 relay team placed 10th (8 minutes, 15.88 seconds). Dragon Shane Lyons was 18th in the long jump (19-9).

On the girls’ side, Morse’s Savannah Simmons-Grover placed 22nd in the javelin 99-0). Brunswick’s Tessa Cassidy finished 27th in the two-mile (11:55.69). The Dragons 3,200 relay was 21st (9:57.57).
