BRUNSWICK — Brunswick Executive Airport, the general aviation facility on the site of the town’s former U.S. Navy airfield, will receive $1.36 million in federal funds to make infrastructure improvements.

The federal Department of Transportation has awarded three grants to the airport, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, said in a press release last week.

Nearly $750,000 will be used to improve drainage on the airport grounds. A grant of $433,000 will pay for repairs to a terminal building’s roof, and another grant will provide $182,000 for a fire protection system.

“Brunswick Executive Airport is a critical piece in the redevelopment of the former Navy base,” Pingree said. “I’m excited that the airport will be able to make these improvements so it can continue to establish itself as a state-of-the-art facility.”

The airport has received prior grants from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Military Airport Program, which provides project-by-project funding to convert former military airfields into civilian airports. Last year, Brunswick Executive Airport was awarded $1.7 million in grants.

The airport is in the fourth year of a five-year, $20 million overhaul to bring it up to civilian aviation standards.

Operated by the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, the airport includes two 8,000-foot runways, 650,000 square feet of hangar and maintenance space, and more than 100 acres of taxiways and aircraft parking.
