BRUNSWICK — Brunswick Executive Airport is receiving $1.7 million in federal grants to bring the former U.S. Navy airfield to civilian aviation standards.

Steve Levesque, executive director of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, said the Federal Aviation Administration grants will be issued by the end of the month.

The FAA grants will be matched with about $88,000 each from MRRA and the Maine Department of Transportation.

The grants come from the FAA’s Military Airport Program, which provides funding to convert former military airfields into civilian airports.

Levesque said the FAA grants will help the developer’s continuing $20 million effort to bring the airport to civilian aviation standards. The five-year project is into its third year, he said.

The airport now has three aviation companies, including Kestrel Aeroworks. Other businesses, like call center SaviLinx, have also taken space on the property.

Levesque said the airport received $7.1 million in FAA grants through June, issued on a project-by-project basis. 

The new FAA grants and local contributions will help MRRA repair the roof of the Terminal 5 building; renovate the Terminal 6 building; design renovation and expansion plans for a snow removal equipment building; design plans to repair drains, and perform maintenance on the airport’s runways.
