CUMBERLAND — Brian MacLeod Hathaway Jr., 43, died unexpectedly Feb. 14  in Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong while vacationing with his family. Cause of death is still unknown.

He was born Nov. 24, 1970, in Bangor, the son of Brian and Judith Hathaway, of Cumberland Foreside. He attended Cumberland schools and graduated from Greely High School in 1989. In high school, he excelled at sports and participated in track, basketball and soccer, where he was a team captain in soccer and named to the state all-star soccer team. At Lyndon State College, he continued to excel in soccer, and was team captain in 1992 and 1993. 

Hathaway graduated from Lyndon State College in 1994 with a sports club management and business degree. Following graduation, he started his career in the spa industry. He began as director of the North Conway Athletic Club. In 2000, he accepted his first position as spa director at the exclusive Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Fla. His passion and thirst for adventure and travel led him to the open seas, where he spent a short time as a spa director on cruise ships. 

He met and fell in love with Ni Nyoman Swandewi, and in November 2008 they were married. That same year, Hathaway was recognized by the spa industry as the Most Influential Spa Leader in Asia and was promoted to senior director of spas for Four Seasons overseeing all 22 spas in Asia-Pacific. On June 26, 2010, their daughter, Ni Putu Saraswati Hathaway, was born.

In 2013, he was offered the CEO position for Plataran Resorts of Indonesia. He moved back to Bali with his wife and daughter to their new home. In February, the family traveled to Hong Kong. Hathaway had a long bucket list of what he wanted to accomplish in his life. Taking his daughter to Disneyland in Hong Kong was at the top of his list, however, he died two days before he was able to follow through on this. Hathaway’s sister, Susan, and his oldest brother, Jim, along with his daughter, Sara, Dewi and her brother, Wayan, were able to honor his wish after he was cremated and took Sara to Disneyland.

Hathaway was a loving, charismatic, talented human being who lived his life with heart. He touched lives all over the world with his generosity and giving nature as both a leader and mentor.

He is survived by his wife, Ni Nyoman Swandewi; daughter, Ni Putu Saraswati Hathaway; father and mother, Brian and Judith Hathaway; sister, Susan and husband, Steve Casey; three brothers, James Hathaway and wife, Gayle, Paul Hathaway and wife, Pam, and Kevin Hathaway and wife, Jessica, his son, Brayden Edson; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Per his wishes, his ashes were spread at his favorite swimming hole and beach at Pantai Karang Sanur in Bali, Indonesia.
