SCARBOROUGH — In a race of political newcomers, Democrat James Boyle has beaten Republican Ruth Summers in Maine Senate District 6.

Boyle rode returns in Gorham and Westbrook to a 7,587 to 4,862 lead over Summers, a Scarborough resident. Summers carried the western portion of Scarborough 4,634 to 4,242, but it was not enough to stop a Boyle victory by a total of 11,729 to 9,496.

The seat had been held by Democrat Phil Bartlett, who was prohibited from seeking a fifth, two-year term because of state term limits laws. Both candidates were seeking elective office for the first time.

Boyle, a Gorham resident, is an environmental consultant for business owners. Summers, of Scarborough, is the wife of Maine Secretary of State and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Charles Summers. She owns Little Hands, a consignment shop, and is a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
