SCARBOROUGH — A federal bankruptcy judge awarded the sale of 14 Borders store leases, including the store at the Maine Mall in South Portland, to Alabama-based Books-A-Million.

The deal stymied an attempt by regional entertainment store Bull Moose, which had hoped to buy “a handful” of Borders leases, including the one at the mall.

“We would have liked to bid on these leases, but a deal was struck between Borders, Books-A-Million, and the bankruptcy court before our bidding opportunity happened,” Bull Moose founder Brett Wickard said in a press release.

Bull Moose started selling books at its Foden Road location, less than two miles from Borders, during the 2010 holiday season. In Bangor, it has been selling books for more than a year.

“New competition is good for everyone,” Wickard said. “It helps Bull Moose work even harder to serve book buyers and compete for their business.”
