BATH — Investigators believe they have determined that a body found June 4 near a buoy just outside Merrymeeting Bay was a man who had jumped into the Kennebec River last year.

Edwin Curtis, 33, was reported by witnesses to have jumped into the river the evening of Nov. 3, 2010. Police Department Lt. Stan Cielinksi said the badly decomposed corpse was found shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday by a family aboard a boat.

The Maine Marine Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard responded, and was assisted by the police and fire departments and the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office. Marine Patrol Lt. John Cornish said Monday that the state medical examiner’s office was examining the body to confirm Curtis’ identity.

The search for Curtis last year lasted two days and involved a helicopter, several watercraft and divers.
