BATH — Jeff Geiger, president of Bath Iron Works since 2009, will become president of General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn., effective Nov. 4.

Frederick Harris, president of General Dynamics National Steet and Shipbuilding Co., will replace Geiger. BIW and NASSCO are wholly owned and separate General Dynamics Corp. subsidiaries, according to a Wednesday press release from General Dynamics.

Michael Mulligan, who heads General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products, will remain a vice president of the parent corporation and will also become BIW’s vice president and general manager.

Geiger, 52, joined BIW in 1984 as a production planner. He became vice president of engineering in 1993 and vice president of operations in 2000, and rose to senior vice president of operations in 2007.

Geiger, who replaced Dugan Shipway as BIW president, has served as a member of the executive control board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program, and as a National Advisory Board member for the Naval Architecture & Maine Engineering Department of the University of Michigan. He has also served on the board of the United Way of Mid Coast Maine.

“I congratulate Jeff Geiger on his selection by General Dynamics to be the new president of Electric Boat,” U.S. Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine said in a press release. “His departure is, however, a great loss to the men and women of Bath Iron Works.

“Jeff is an extraordinary leader who had come up through the ranks at BIW and had worked in the shipyard for nearly 30 years, earning the respect of the workers, the Navy, and the Maine Congressional Delegation,” added Collins, a senior member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

U.S. Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, expressed gratitude to Geiger for “his steadfast leadership of Bath Iron Works over the past three years,” and also welcomed Harris and Mulligan aboard BIW.

“Their vast depth of leadership experience will surely benefit the shipyard in the years to come, and I look forward to working with them, as well as the rest of BIW’s leadership team, to ensure that the yard continues to be well-positioned to maintain a steady workforce and build world-class Navy ships far into the future,” King said.

Harris, 68, became NASSCO’s president in 2006, having previously served as  senior vice president of programs at General Dynamics Electric Boat. He joined the company in 1973. Mulligan, 50, became head of General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products in 2006.
