BATH — Bath Iron Works was awarded $70 million in a contract modification for two lines of ships.

With the modification, BIW will continue providing planning, design, and material support services for both the maintenance and modernization of the Arleigh Burke line of destroyers and Oliver Hazard Perry class of guided missile frigates.

“The awarding of these dollars is welcome news for BIW and its skilled workers,” U.S. Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, said in a statement. “It also represents the Navy’s continuing commitment to the surface fleet, which is crucial for the future of the Navy and of our national security.”

“This contract represents $70 million of work at the yard next year, which is important to help keep some of the best shipbuilders in the world on the job,” U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, said in a separate statement.
