An effort by Morse High School students this summer to built a replica of a 17th century shallop received a boost Wednesday when Bath Iron Works donated a variety of safety supplies. Science teacher Eric Varney and shipwright William West will work with 14 students to build the tow and sailing vessel. Laura Mathisen, director of environmental health and safety at BIW, explained how to use the safety equipment before a few of them tried out the various helmets, masks and other devices. From left to right are Varney and Morse students Matt Munster, Max Renaud, Brandon Votra and Aaron Doughty. The shallop is being built on the BFC Marine property at Commercial and Lambard streets in Bath.
