FREEPORT — Betty Augusta Small, 82, of Yarmouth, died May 2 at a Freeport nursing home.

She was born in Patterson, N.J., on Aug. 6, 1926, a daughter of Lillian and Harold Bucken.

After graduating from local schools, she studied bookkeeping at Brown University. She worked for Prudential Insurance in Manhattan and later with K-Mart.

An active community member, she was a member of the Village Improvement Society, an ombudsman and a docent for the Portland Museum of Art. She also was an accomplished artist, working in stained glass, water color and reverse glass painting.

Her interests included classical music, bird watching and flowers. She will be remembered as a kind and generous woman with a great sense of style.

She was predeceased by her sister Anita Ann Reyda.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Ivan Small of Yarmouth; her son Howard Small and his wife Debbie of Brunswick; her brother Ed Bucken and his wife Pat of Florida; her brother-in-law Steve Reyda of New York and his children, Stephen, Diane and Janis; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on May 6 in Yarmouth.
